History reveals that Iran has ambitions to reestablish the greatness of its former Persian Empire and Turkey has ambitions to reestablish the greatness of its former Ottoman Empire.
Reading Ezekiel 38 we find the word “Gog,” the meaning of which is uncertain. The name appears only here in Ezekiel 38:1-3 and in 1 Chr 5:4 in the Old Testament. In the New Testament it appears only once in Rev 20:8. The associated place name, Magog, appears in the table of nations in Gen 10:2 with Gomar, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras, all sons of Japheth. In Ezekiel 38:3 Gog is called the “prince” of Rosh, Meshech and Tubal. Meshech and Tubal were provinces of Asia Minor. The geographical area today would include parts of Iran, Turkey, and southern provinces of Russia. These were the locations of Gog’s allies.
So, we see in the opening verses 1-7 of Ezekiel 38 a prophecy against Turkey, Iran, and Russia. And these appear to be the countries that seem to be moving toward forming an alliance against Israel at this time.
Consider Ezekiel 38:1-6: “And the word of the Lord came to me saying, Son of man, set your face against Gog of the land of Magog, (Russia) the prince of Rosh,(Russia) Meshech,(Eastern Turkey, Russia) and Tubal, (Eastern Turkey) and prophecy against him, and say, “Thus says the Lord God, “Behold, I am against you, O Gog, prince of Rosh, Meshech and Tubal. And I will turn you about, and put hooks into your jaws, and I will bring you out, and all your army, horses and horsemen, all of them splendidly attired, a great company with buckler and shield, all of them wielding swords; Persia,(Iran) Ethiopia, and Put (Egypt) with them, all of them with shield and helmet; Gomer (Turkey) with all its troops; Beth-togarmah (Turkey) from the remote parts of the north with all its troops – many peoples with you.”
The church age ends with the close of the final church period, the Laodicean or lukewarm church period described in Revelation 3:14-22 which, according to church history began about 1900. Then Revelation chapter 4 begins with a picture of the church in heaven after the Rapture followed by the seven-year Tribulation Period. The battle described in Ezekiel 38-39 occurs at the end of the Tribulation period.
If we are truly watching the stage beginning to be set for the final Invasion of Israel as prophesied in Ezekiel 38 then it’s another indication the rapture is near and I ask “Are you trusting Jesus as your Savior?”
